Frequently asked

Garage door remote help

A few of the questions we hear most often. Find more on our FAQ page, or reach out and we'll help you find the right part.

Is there a universal remote control?

Many remotes advertise themselves as universal, but no single remote works on every garage door or gate. Manufacturers use different frequencies and proprietary technologies like Security+ and Multicode.

The Clicker CLT1D, for example, works on roughly 90% of garage doors and gates, but does not support Intellicode, SecureCode, or MegaCode systems. Universal remotes are most useful when you need to consolidate several different transmitters into one.

My garage door remote isn't working properly. What can I do?

A typical visor or keychain remote has a range of about 3–5 car lengths. If yours isn't reaching that, try the following:

  • Replace the battery. A weak battery is the most common cause of poor range.
  • Make sure nothing is blocking the line of sight between remote and receiver. Car bodies can weaken the signal.
  • Clear the receiver and re-program your remote. Instructions are in the product manual or on the manufacturer's website.
  • Disconnect the pushbutton wires from the motor briefly. Power-line interference can shorten range.
  • Check for nearby interference: TV/CCTV cable, amplifiers, fluorescent lights, surge protectors, battery chargers, sprinkler timers, alarm systems.
  • If none of that helps, the remote may simply be dead. We carry a wide selection of replacement remotes.
How do I know which remote fits my opener?

Every product page on this site lists the openers a remote is compatible with. The fastest way is to find the model number on your existing remote (usually printed inside the battery cover) and match it to the product page of the same model. If you have an older remote that has been discontinued, the product page for its replacement model will note the compatibility.

How long do orders take to ship?

In-stock items ship via UPS from our warehouse in Texas, typically within one business day of your order. Transit time depends on your location. Tracking information is sent to the email address used at checkout once the package is on its way.
